THE BELIZE ARCHAEOLOGY TOUR + TIKAL

First & Third Sunday – Every Month – All Year Round

Tour of Belize’s magnificent Maya Classic legacy. Sites included: Lamanai, Xunantunich, Caracol, Cahal Pech and Tikal in neighbor Guatemala.

SCHEDULE Tour begins on the first and third Sunday of each month. Arrive to Belize City on Sunday and depart 8 days later on Saturday, or extend your stay in the Belizean Cayes and Coral Reef Barrier.

DAY 1 SUN. ARRIVAL TO BELIZE CITY, Belize
Meet at Belize City Airport and transfer to hotel in Belize City for overnight. Welcome Dinner. (D)

DAY 2 MON. LAMANAI, Belize
Transfer to Northern Belice to take a boat ride on the New River & Lagoon. Lamanai has imposing pyramids in several plazas, some of them with impressive stucco carvings. A important information about Lamanai is that it was inhabited by Maya People for more than 2,000 years. Beginning in the Pre-Classic, it survived the Classic Maya collapse, it didn`t survive the Spanish conquest. Overnight in Belice City. (B.L.)

DAY 3 TUE. XUNANTUNICH & CAHAL PECH, Belize
Transfer to Western Belize. Near San Ignacio town, by the Mopan River that has to be crossed on a man-moved ferry boat, Xunantunich Archaeological Site is located. It is an interesting small site with a very tall pyramid with an spectacular view of the San Ignacio valley. Transfer to San Ignacio to visit the Cahal Pech Archaeological Site that is almost within town. Overnight in San Ignacio Area. (B.L.)

DAY 4 WED. CARACOL, Belize
One of the largest political, religious and economic centres of the Maya Classic Time. Magnificent and well restored pyramids, the tallest one is named Caana. Caracol is connected through a network of sakbeob with several small sites. In the 7th Century, in alliance with Calakmul, Caracol defeated mighty Tikal. Crossing the border back to Guatemala, Overnight in Lake Peten Itza Area. (B.L.)


DAY 5 THU. TIKAL, Guatemala
The third UNESCO’s World Heritage Site of the itinerary and the first one in the Maya World, since 1979. Intensive construction took place at Tikal from the late Pre-classic Period until the waning of Classic Maya civilization around AD 900. At its peak the city covered about 48 square miles and had a population estimated at 55,000. Tikal's Stelae 29 bears the earliest Long Count date known in the Maya lowlands. In 292 AD Temple IV, one of the many pyramids erected to memorialize the dead rulers of Tikal's royal dynasty, and one of the tallest of Maya structures at 212 feet, was erected. Overnight in Lake Peten Itza Area. (B.L.)

DAY 6 FRI. TIKAL, Guatemala
Free morning in Tikal. Afternoon transfer back to Belize. Overnight in San Ignacio Area. (B.)

DAY 7 SAT. DEPARTURE FROM BELIZE CITY, Belize
Transfer to Belize International Airport. (B.)
